Cover Creation Graphic

As a designer, I always begin with a short story synopsis, some character descriptions, and a list of things the author would like to see. Some tell me things like “No kissing couples! Yuck!” or “Lots of sparkles! I want ALL the sparkles!” I never know what to expect when I get that initial email from a client about what sort of project I will be working on for the next couple of weeks.

I first browse stock photos to find pictures I think might work and consult with the author to narrow down the choices. In the graphic, you can see the two we ended up choosing for Selina’s story. Sometimes I do several “mock covers” with different options so that the author can actually visualize the direction I am headed to make sure we’re on the same page.

Then the real fun begins as I do the gritty work of photoshopping the two pictures together, figuring out the typography, and of course ALL THE SPARKLES. I do so love sparkles.

And there you have it! What do you think of Selina’s new cover and the blurb for her amazing Rapunzel retelling?
